The BlackBerry Web client is a full-featured email client that provides all the expected bells and whistles you might find in a traditional email application, plus a few options tailored specifically to mobile email. It's important that you get a handle on the options available to you within the BlackBerry Web Client and tweak them to suit your particular email needs.

25. Configure Web Client Options

1.
Log In to the BlackBerry Web Client Site on Your PC

If you aren't already logged in to the BlackBerry Web Client, navigate to the BlackBerry Web Client site using your desktop web browser. Enter your user ID and password in the appropriate fields and click the Login button to log in.

2.
Navigate to the Options Page

Click the Options icon on the top BlackBerry Web Client menu to open the Options page, which provides access to a variety of options related to your account.

3.
Configure the Email Identification Settings

The Email identification settings consist of an auto signature, a reply-to address, and a friendly name . The Auto signature setting is useful in automatically calling out in your emails that they were sent from your handheld device, as opposed to your desktop email account. In the event that you receive both handheld and desktop emails to your device, the text you type in this text box helps clarify to message recipients that you sent a message from your device. Of course, in some circumstances, you might not want to reveal that email messages are originating from your handheld device, in which case you can turn off the Auto signature setting by clicking the No option.

The Reply-to address setting allows you to change the email address to which replies to your handheld email messages are sent. By default, this field is empty, which results in replies going to the "sent from" email address for your account. See 29 Change the Sent from Email Address to find out how to change the "sent from" address.

TIP

Changing the reply-to address can be useful when you want to send messages from your device but receive responses using a different email account. For example, you might want replies to go to your primary corporate email account, as opposed to your BlackBerry handheld account.

The Friendly Name setting shows your friendly name, which you entered when you first set up your BlackBerry Web Client account. You can change this name if you so choose, which alters the name that appears in the From line of email messages sent from your device.

4.
Configure the Message Handling Settings

The Message handling settings on the Options page allow you to save a copy of sent messages and include or attach the original message to message replies you send. Unless you really need a history of sent handheld emails and you don't mind cleaning up your Deleted Items folder on a regular basis, I recommend turning off the Save sent messages option. Otherwise, your email storage space can get eaten up rather quickly.

NOTE

Allotted email storage space varies among wireless service providers; for example,T-Mobile gives you 10MB of space for your BlackBerry Web Client email messages. Although this might seem like a lot of space, when you factor in email attachments, it can still get exhausted if you aren't careful. By careful , I mean deleting any messages you don't need anymore, especially those with attachments.

5.
Configure the Date/Time and Viewing Options Settings

The last block of settings on the Options page consists of Date/Time and Viewing options settings. The Date/Time setting simply determines the time zone used for messages sent through the BlackBerry Web Client, whereas the Viewing options setting specifies the maximum number of messages displayed on the Web page at a time. The Viewing options setting is purely up to your own tastesI prefer scrolling through a big list of messages as opposed to clicking from page to page, so I cranked the setting up to 50 .

6.
Exit and Save Changes

When you're finished configuring the BlackBerry Web Client options, click the OK button to finish and accept the changes. If, for some reason, you want to back out of any changes you've made, just click the Cancel button instead.
