The Calendar application is a flexible tool for analyzing and interacting with dates and times. Along with simulating a printed calendar by providing static information such as days, weeks, months, and years , the calendar also supports the creation of appointments and meetings that span lengths of time that are readily visible within the calendar's views. In fact, a thorough understanding of the calendar's views is required before you can successfully use the calendar as a scheduling assistant. Fortunately, navigating through the calendar and zooming in and out on specific dates and times is a straightforward process.

74. Navigate in the Calendar

1.
Launch the Calendar Application

On the Home screen, scroll to the Calendar icon and click the trackwheel. The Calendar application is launched and displayed on the screen. If you haven't yet created any appointments or meetings, your schedule is likely empty. However, if you've synchronized the calendar with your desktop PC, you might see some appointments and meetings in the list.

TIP

If you already use a calendar to schedule appointments and meetings in a personal information management (PIM) client such as Microsoft Outlook, consider synchronizing PIM data between your BlackBerry device and your desktop PC using the BlackBerry Desktop Manager software. See 10 Synchronize PIM Data with Your PC . If your company uses the BlackBerry Enterprise Server, you might have access to wireless synchronization with your PIM data. Check with your network administrator to see whether this service is available.

2.
Navigate to a Specific Date

One way to navigate to a date within the calendar is to specify an exact date. To navigate to a specific date, click the trackwheel and select Go to Date from the menu that appears. Click once more to view a dialog box that prompts you to select the date.

3.
Select the Date

The Date Selection dialog box is a bit confusing at first if you don't know how to modify the individual date components. Scrolling the trackwheel moves between the various components of the date (month, day, and year) but doesn't immediately reveal how to change the values. To change the value of a date component, press the Alt key on the keyboard. A small window pops up and allows you to scroll the trackwheel to change the value. Click the trackwheel to accept the new value or press the Escape button to cancel it. When you finish selecting the desired date, click the trackwheel to navigate to the date or press the Escape button to cancel the navigation request.

TIP

To quickly navigate to the current date, click the trackwheel in the Calendar application and select Today from the menu that appears. Click once more, and you are taken to today's date. There is an even quicker way to navigate to the current datepress the Q W key to move to today's date.

4.
Navigate to a Relative Date

Just as you can navigate to a specific date by selecting the date, you can also navigate to a relative date. You do so by simply stepping through dates either a day at a time or a week at a time. For example, to navigate to the day after the currently viewed day, click the trackwheel, select Next Day on the menu, and click again. Similarly, you can select Prev Day to navigate to the previous day. If moving through dates one day at a time isn't quick enough for you, select Next Week or Prev Week from the menu to move forward and back through the calendar a week at a time.

TIP

You can use a few shortcut keys to navigate to a relative date. Press the T Y and B N keys to move to the previous and next hour ( Day and Week formats) or week ( Month format). Similarly, the D F and J K keys move to the previous and next day in all the calendar views.

This description of navigating to a relative date assumes that you are currently viewing the calendar in Day format. If you change to a different format (see step 5), the available menu commands change. For example, there are no Next Day and Prev Day commands when you are in Week or Month format. In fact, Month format doesn't have the Next Week and Prev Week commands, either. However, Month format adds commands for navigating months and years at a time ( Next Month, Prev Month, Next Year , and Prev Year ). Agenda format just has the Next Day and Prev Day commands.

5.
Change the Calendar View

Unlike a traditional print calendarwhich typically provides just a month viewthe Calendar application provides several formats for viewing the calendar. The calendar defaults to showing you Day format, which contains a list of hours in the current day. You change the format of the calendar by clicking the trackwheel and selecting the format from the menu. To switch to Week format, for example, select View Week from the menu and click the trackwheel. The calendar view changes to show the currently selected date and time in Week format.

The other menu commands for changing the calendar format include View Day, View Month , and View Agenda . All the calendar formats operate on the currently selected date and time. In a way, you can think of the formats as zooming in and out on the currently selected date and time. Agenda format is the only exception to this line of thinking in that it provides an alternative way to view your appointments and meetings in one list, organized by date and time. If you have no appointments for a given day, the day isn't listed in the Agenda format.

TIP

In Month format, scrolling the trackwheel moves the selection across the days of the month horizontally. To move vertically through the days, hold down the Alt key while scrolling the trackwheel. A similar shortcut applies to the Week view, where scrolling the trackwheel moves through the hours of a day, whereas holding down the Alt key and scrolling the trackwheel moves through the days. If you continue moving through the days past those shown in the current view, the days in the view scroll.

6.
Exit the Calendar

When you finish using the Calendar application, press the Escape button to exit it and return to the Home screen.
