Installing the X Window System

Now that you have been exposed to a little bit of the X Window system, you might be wondering where to get it and how to install it. There are a few versions of X11 available for Mac OS X. The one that will probably be suitable for most uses is Apple's X11. You can install it from your operating system CD, or you can download it from Apple at http://www.apple.com/macosx/features/x11/. Apple's X11 is based on XFree86. If you want the latest X11, XFree86 source is available from http://www.xfree86.org/. If you're looking for something in between, you might be interested in the Fink port, available at http://fink.sourceforge.net/ or the DarwinPorts version, available at http://darwinports.opendarwin.org/. If you discover that you need a full-featured X11, compiling from source or getting an Xfree86 port will be most suitable to your needs.
