Mixing Down with the MTK

 <  Day Day Up  >

There are two methods for mixing down your tracks to the Mastering Room. One way is to mix your tracks down to a two-track stereo master without MTK, then run the two-track stereo pair through the Mastering Room with an MTK patch applied. The other way is to mix down all your tracks in the Mastering Room while applying an MTK effects patch at the same time. Either way is fine, and the method you choose will basically depend on how many effects you need to use simultaneously .

A single MTK effect takes up an entire effects card. If you have two effects cards installed, you can use one for the MTK and the other for two stereo effects. If you need to use more than two stereo effects for your stereo bounce, you will want to add the MTK after you mix down to two tracks. If you don't need to use more than two stereo effects for your bounce, then you can apply an MTK patch to the Mastering Room while performing the stereo bounce. To mix down to two tracks while adding an MTK patch, do the following:

1.
Enter the Mastering Room as described earlier in this chapter.

2.
Set your faders and mixer settings how you want them for your mixdown . You can practice your mix while the SW switch is set to OFF.

3.
Use the cursor keys to move to FXIns.

4.
Press ENTER.

5.
Use the cursor keys to select either FX1 or FX3. These are the only ones you can use for an MTK patch.

6.
Use the jogwheel to change the setting to Ins.

7.
If you selected FX1, press F1 (FX1). If you selected FX3, press F3 (FX3).

8.
Press F2 (Sel).

9.
Use the jogwheel to find the MTK patch you want to use.

10.
Press F4 (Exec).

11.
Press F6 (Exit).

12.
Press PLAY to hear how your newly selected MTK effect patch sounds on your mix. Use the master level fader to push the overall level in the OUT meter as close to 0db as possible without clipping. (Clipping means hitting 0db.) When you are happy with the mix and the output level, press STOP and rewind to the beginning of the song.

13.
Use the cursor keys to select SW. Use the jogwheel to change it to On.

14.
Use the cursor keys to move to the STATUS setting. Use the jogwheel to change it to REC.

15.
Press REC and PLAY on the transport controls.

16.
When you reach the end of the song, press STOP.

17.
To hear your newly mastered tracks, follow the instructions under "Playing Back the Master Tracks."

18.
If you are unhappy with the mixdown, press UNDO to cancel it. Then go back to the Mastering Room and repeat steps 13 “17.
