23.1. The Two GarageBand ChallengesBefore you fill out your Grammy award application, however, two cautions are in order. First, GarageBand is much more demanding of your Mac than its little icousins (iPhoto, iTunes, and so on). It craves memory and processor power like few other programs you'll ever use. Your first challenge in using GarageBand, therefore, is making it comfortable on your Mac. At first, you may find that job about as exciting as feeding a team of sumo wrestlers who've taken up residence in your guest room. But these pages, especially Chapter 33, will ease the way. The second challenge you'll face is understanding the two different kinds of musical information that GarageBand can record, edit, and play back (which, not too long ago, required two different pieces of music software). The point is that if you can overcome these two challengesthe one in your Mac, the other in your brainGarageBand offers an incredible musical experience. It will let you into a world of music production that was once restricted to people with thousands, or hundreds of thousands, of dollars to invest. |
