Adding the Clip to the TimelineTwice

The clip for which you will be creating the "blurred features" in is actually used twice. This is because you are really blurring everything in the clip and essentially "poking a hole" through the good clip where you want the blur to occur, letting the underlying blurry clip show through. Therefore, you need to drop the clip on to the Timeline twice. If you are applying this effect to a clip already on the Timeline, you'll need to cut the clip where this effect is to take place, make a copy, and place the copy on the track directly above the original clip.

Add Your Clip

For this project, we'll need to be in Timeline view. So, if the My Project panel is in Sceneline view, click the Timeline button to switch.

Select the undercoverbaby.avi clip from the Media panel and drag and drop it onto the Timeline onto the Video 1 track.

Drag a second copy of undercoverbaby.avi from the Media panel onto the Video 2 track in the Timeline.

Since we have two clips that are identical, we'll change the display style for the Video 2 track to help us keep track of which clip is which. To do so, click on the Set Video Track Display Style button for the Video 2 track until there are no images displayed on the track, as shown in the illustration.

Important

Be sure to line up each clip so that the head of the clip is at the front of the track, as shown in the illustration.

Did You Know?

You have four video track display options. Use the Set Video Track Display Style button to change how video clips look on a given track. Clips can display on a track in one of four ways. First, a clip can display as a series of frames that run the full length of the clip to give you a good indication as to the contents of the clip. Second, a clip can display with just a single frame at the head and another at the tail of the clip. Third, a clip can display with just a single video frame at the start (head) of the clip. And finally, a clip can display with no frames at all.
