More Note Pad techniques

More Note Pad techniques

Note Pad is great when you're on the go. Use it to keep track of things, but don't forget to have fun with it, too.

Real Life Note Pad

Construction on Kate's dream house starts next month. When she visits the site, she sketches her basic floorplan notions in Note Pad to share with her architect, who lives 50 miles away. She syncs to her PC, opens Note Pad in Palm Desktop software, selects the note, and sends it to the architect. The next time they talk on the phone, her architect has a much clearer understanding of Kate's ideas.

Transfer note ideas to memos

Create the same categories in Note Pad and Memos. When you're on the go, jot things down in Note Pad. Later, transfer ideas in Note Pad to the appropriate memos and add detail. The same technique works for Calendar, Contacts, and Tasks.

Get sketchy

Sometimes a crude sketch can express more than a phrase. Give it a try.

Quick contact info

On the run? Jot down a new acquaintance's name , phone, and email in Note Pad, and return later to enter the details in Contacts.

Use the alarm

Alarms in Note Pad are a great way to remember something you might otherwise forget. Create an alarm for a note by selecting Options > Alarm . Select the Date box to set the date and time for the alarm.

Chapter 12: Did you discover how to...

Use notes and memos together?… Jot a note about a concert listing and set an alarm to remind yourself to buy tickets?… Use Note Pad as a simple phone memo system, complete with alarms?… Draw a map for getting to the airport?

Chapter 13. Photos and music

In this chapter

  • Manage digital photos on your handheld

  • Edit photos in Palm Desktop software

  • Transfer MP3 files from your PC to your handheld

Leave those ungainly photo albums and fading, dog-eared photos at home. Your handheld lets you see and share photos wherever you go. And RealOne Mobile Player turns your handheld into a portable stereo. Transfer MP3 music files from your computer to an expansion card for listening at the gym or during your commute.

How many songs do cards hold?

Figures are for typical MP3s (recorded at 128 kbps).

Card size

Approximate capacity

64 MB

1 hour of music

128 MB

2 hours of music

256 MB

4 hours of music

Expansion card required

You need an expansion card (sold separately) to listen to music on your handheld. Note that music and photos can reside on the same card.

Card reader

A must-have accessory for active MP3 or photo usage is a card reader that plugs into the USB port of your laptop or PC. A process that might take 20 minutes via sync requires only a few minutes with a card reader.

All about Photos

Your handheld lets you store, share, and view full- color digital photographs. Most pictures you've downloaded or taken with a digital camera are viewable directly on your handheld. In Windows, use Palm Desktop to create albums and slide shows to share with friends .

Install Photos

You must install Photos onto your handheld from the installation CD. Windows users, add photos to Palm Desktop and then sync them to your handheld. Mac users, add the Send To Handheld droplet to the Dock and then drag photos directly onto it from iPhoto.

Windows

If you have a Windows PC, use Palm Desktop to edit and view photos.

Mac

If you have a Mac, use iPhoto or another app to edit and view photos.

Copy photos to your handheld

Windows

From My Computer or Windows Explorer, select the photos you want to copy. Drag and drop them onto the Photos app within Palm Desktop. Synchronize.

Mac

View, organize, and name photos

In the thumbnail or list view, tap a photo to display it. Tap it again to go back to the previous view. Tap the Slide Show button to watch a slide show; tap the screen to stop it.

In the list view, tap the Name header bar to switch between ascending and descending order. Tap Date to reverse the date order. Drag the divider to create more space.

Use the Photo menu to view photo details, delete or rotate photos, copy photos to an expansion card, and more. If you've installed SMS or email, Send Photo appears.

Four great uses for Photos

  • Carry your pictures in digital photo albums instead of in your wallet.

  • Use photos to create a pictorial catalog of something you're selling.

  • Send or beam albums to friends, family, and peers.

  • Carry photos of different stages of a do-it-yourself project for reference.
