Lab Question

You have recently implemented MetaFrame XP in your network. You have around 200 clients locally, plus you also support about 40 remote users. These remote users will require access to Citrix applications. None of your users have an ICA client installed, and you're trying to decide the best method for implementing the client on your system. Remotely, all your users are running Windows 95 machines, which connect through a 256Kbps WAN link. Locally, most of your users are running Windows 2000 machines; however, you do have an Art department with 10 Macintosh systems. All of your local users need access to the Citrix server. The application that you've published supports sound, but you do not want your WAN bandwidth taken up by sound support, as sound is not necessary for the local users. How would you deploy the ICA client to the local and remote users, and how would you manage sound support on the remote users?

the local windows 2000 clients should be deployed from a network share point. create a shared drive on a fileserver; then copy the win32 ica client files to that drive. at the client machine, double-click the folder that contains the files; then run setup.exe. this will install the ica win32 program neighborhood client. the macintosh clients will have to be installed by hand. remember, only the win32/win16 clients can be installed from a network share point. take the citrix client cd to each mac and install the mac client. the remote users can be installed in one of two ways. the most tedious method is, of course, to create client diskettes from the ica client creator window on the server and send the diskettes to the remote office. each user, or a local staff member, will then have to install the client by hand on their machine. the other method would be for them to install from the previously configured network share point. the drawback to this method is bandwidth. if all 40 users decide to install at the same time, the link could become saturated fairly quickly, therefore staggering the installs would be the best method. the best way to take care of the sound issue is to simply disable client audio mapping on the citrix connection. to disable it for only the wan users, this would have to be set at the client level, which would require someone touching each client machine. since audio support is not mandatory for the local users, it would be easier to simply disable all audio mapping. click on the citrix connection button on the ica toolbar, select the appropriate connection, and choose properties. click the ica settings button and check the box next to disable client audio mapping. this will turn the audio off for all users on this citrix connection.
