Task 1: Working with Program Shortcuts

After you've located the program file for which you want to create a shortcut icon, right-click it.

In the menu that opens, choose Send To , and then select Desktop (create shortcut) .

Windows adds the shortcut to your desktop. (You might have to minimize any open windows to see it.) To change the name of the shortcut, right-click the shortcut.

In the menu that opens, click Rename .

INTRODUCTION

You can create shortcuts and place them on the desktop to provide quick access to programs. You can then double-click a shortcut to quickly start that program or open that file ”without having to open menus and folders. In addition to being able to create shortcuts, you can rename or even delete any shortcut on your desktop.

Shortcut to File or Printer

In addition to creating shortcuts to programs, you can create them to files or folders or to your printer.

TIP

Search for a File

If you can't find the program file for which you want to create a shortcut icon, try searching for it. Finding a particular file is covered in Part 4, "Working with Files."

Type a new name for the shortcut, and press Enter .

To delete a shortcut icon, right-click it, and choose Delete from the menu that appears.

In the Confirm File Delete dialog box, click Yes to delete the shortcut.

The shortcut is deleted from your desktop.

TIP

What Happens When You Delete?

Deleting a shortcut does not delete that program from your hard drive. To delete the program, you must uninstall it or delete the program and its related folders and files (see Task 11).

TIP

Change Your Mind?

If you change your mind about deleting an item, you can restore items you've relegated to the Recycle Bin. To do so, double-click the Recycle Bin icon on the desktop. In the Recycle Bin window, right-click the item you want to restore, and choose Restore . The item returns to its original location. Close the Recycle Bin by clicking its Close button in the top-right corner of the window.
