Chapter 5: Running the Web-Enabled Application

Now that you have converted your source members , you are ready to test the Web-Faced application. To run your application, you would typically need to copy all of your Web project files to a WebSphere Application Server (WAS) environment. Luckily, a WebSphere Application Server test environment is imbedded in WebSphere Development Studio Client. The WAS test environment makes it much easier for you to test your WebFaced application because you do not need to work with a WAS console and deploy to a remote environment. Later on, I will show you how to copy all the necessary application files to a production environment for the various versions of WAS.

In real-life application development, you would test thoroughly in the test environment, then export the WebFacing project files to a remote WAS for final testing before moving the Web-enabled application to your production WAS environment. For now, using the test environment on your workstation until you are sure that your WebFaced application is ready for public use will simplify testing tremendously.

The Goal of the Exercise

The goal in this chapter is to practice testing your Web-enabled application in the WAS test environment. In the WebFacing perspective, you will specify that you want to run your project in the Development Studio Client test environment. From the initial Web page, you will select the link created by the WebFacing Tool to invoke the WebFaced Order Entry application.

At the end of this exercise, you should be able to

  • Set up the WebSphere Application Server test environment

  • Run the Web application in the WebSphere Application Server test environment

  • Select the link on the invocation Web page to invoke the RPG application

  • Step through the Web-enabled application using the HTML-based user interface
