Next Steps in Administering IIS

If you plan to continue working with IIS Manager as your main tool for administering IIS 6, your next steps will probably be something like this:

  • Unlock the features of IIS needed to enable your websites and applications to run properly. To do this, you will need to use the Web Service Extensions (WSE) node in your IIS Manager console tree, and this is covered in Chapter 10, “Securing IIS.”

  • Create and configure websites and applications on your server (see Chapter 7, “Creating and Configuring Websites,”  and also Chapter 8, “Creating and Configuring Applications”).

  • Create and configure FTP, SMTP, and NNTP sites on your server (see Chapter 9, “Creating and Configuring FTP Sites,” and Chapter 15, “SMTP and NNTP”).

  • Monitor, tune, maintain, and troubleshoot IIS (covered in Chapter 12, “Performance Tuning and Monitoring,” and Chapter 13, “Maintenance and Troubleshooting”).

Before we look at these procedures in detail, however, let’s look at some other methods of remotely administering IIS 6 machines on your network.
