Adding a Name and a Link to Buttons

 < Day Day Up >

Your buttons may look great, but they are missing an important element. After all, the main purpose of a button is to provide a method of linking to another page of your site. You can add links to your buttons in Fireworks, or you can add them later in Macromedia Dreamweaver. To add a link to a button in Fireworks, select the button and then type the link in the Link text box in the Property inspector. Enter a name for your button in the Button name text box. The name you enter for a button is the name that is assigned to the image when you export your page.

1.

Select the Shop Online button and then type shop.htm for the link and shop for the name; for the Facts & Recipes button, type facts.htm for the link and facts for the name; for the Request a Catalog button, type request.htm for the link and request for the name; and for the About Us button, type about.htm for the link and about for the name.

2.

Select each button again and type a description of the button in the Alt text box in the Property inspector. For example, type Shop Online Button in the Alt text box for the first button.

Alternate (Alt) text is displayed when the user moves over the button. It is also displayed if the graphics are slow to download, or if the user has turned off graphic display in the browser. Alt text also plays an important role for the visually impaired. Users with screen readers (the computer kind) hear your page spoken. To speak your buttons, the reader uses the Alt text associated with the button. To make your pages accessible to everyone, take the extra time to add Alt text to all of your buttons.

3.

Choose Select > Deselect and then click Fit Canvas on the Property inspector.

The Fit Canvas button displays on the Property inspector only if nothing is selected. You could also choose Modify > Canvas > Trim Canvas.

4.

Save your file.
