Java > Core SWING advanced programming > 5. BI-DIRECTIONAL TEXT > Summary

Summary

This chapter examined in detail the support provided by the text components for bi-directional text, a feature that is based on new facilities provided by Java 2D. We started by looking at the difference between logical fonts and physical fonts and demonstrated that Unicode characters have an inherent rendering direction that varies from language to language. We saw examples of Arabic text mixed with Roman characters and looked at how the difference between the character ordering in the model and the visual ordering on the screen affects the way on which the text is rendered and how the caret reacts when the user moves it over direction-change boundaries.
