1.5 Chapter Summary

In this chapter, we have discussed the evolution of the Internet and how router architectures have changed to meet the demand of services being offered , such as voice and video. This chapter pointed out some of the problems associated with the past and current architectures and the ability to provide IntServ. It also provided an overview of some of the methods of supporting IntServ, such as RSVP and DiffServ. These, coupled with MPLS, are playing key roles in traffic engineering. In addition, MPLS is being expanded further and further, supporting both traffic engineering and VPN technologies.

This chapter also discussed Juniper Networks' product positioning and how the M-Series fits in to the key core, edge, and mobile markets. The M160 is used predominately in the ISP carrier core space, while the M40e is making its way into the edge market with its added redundancy over the original M40. The J20 GGSN node, created through a joint venture with Ericsson, and the G10 CMTS, offered through an acquisition, were both also discussed. With these product offerings, Juniper Networks is able to focus on multiple market segments and to evolve into other markets. The company's ability to position a product and provide a reliable path of scalability and support makes it not only a leader of current times, but likely to be a major innovator of the future.

Finally, this chapter discussed Juniper Networks' commitment to education and certification. With the expansion of its curriculum, Juniper Networks now provides introductory and advanced course offerings. Specialized courses, such as Advanced MPLS and Advanced VPN, further signify the company's commitment to providing quality education for emerging technologies. In addition to its educational offerings, Juniper Networks has a certification program that not only tests platform knowledge, but internetworking theory as well.
