Again, I have to recommend RPMs as the way to go (see the section titled Deciding On an Installation Method-Pros and Cons in Chapter 1). I recommend that you get the latest from the GTK+ Web site: www.gtk.org. (At least go there first to find a list of mirror sites.)
When you re connected, fire up your FTP software and point it to ftp.gtk.org. (You can use your browser, just put in ftp://ftp.gtk.org/. However, this may cause occasional problems with the download, so it s best to stick to FTP software if you can.) At the time this book was written, the full path was ftp.gtk.org/pub/gtk/v1.2/binary/RPMS/RedHat-6.2/RPMS/i386/.
Be sure to check for newer files at the time you download. When this book was written, the directory above contained four files:
glib-1.2.8.i386.rpm
glib- devel -1.2.8-1.i386.rpm
gtk+-1.2.8-i386.rpm
gtk+-devel-1.2.8-1.i386.rpm
Download and install these four files. GTK+ is dependent on GLib. So, in order to install GTK+, you must have GLib. The devel normally marks tools needed for development; so, obviously those are necessary too. See the instructions regarding installation from an RPM in the previous chapter; all the command flags will be the same, only the *.rpm filenames will be different.
