Exam Essentials

Understand the clustering methods . The majority of this chapter has focused on clustering using the Microsoft Clustering Service, but you will need to have read the introductory sections pertaining to both of the clustering methods available in Windows Server 2003. Although you will be deploying only Exchange servers on MSCS clusters, you may need to deploy front-end Exchange servers in an NLB cluster as part of your front-end/back-end solution. Be aware of the perks and drawbacks of each clustering method.

Understand the clustering modes. In previous versions of Exchange, only one clustering mode or the other was fully supported. In Exchange Server 2003, you now have the choice to create either Active/Active or Active/Passive clusters. Ensure that you understand the specific requirements and limitations of each clustering mode.

Understand the limitations on Active/Active cluster nodes. Active/Passive clustering is the preferred method of deploying Exchange Server 2003 clusters. You will want to remember why this is so and what limitations are imposed on Active/Active clusters.

Know how to secure a front-end server. Several services that are, by default, running on any Exchange server can (and should) be safely disabled on any front-end server you configure. Ensure that you understand how this process is completed and which specific services you can safely disable to secure a front-end server. As well, understand the security methods that can be used to secure traffic from a client to a front-end server and from the front-end server to other hosts inside the protected, internal network.
