This chapter describes the process for installing SharePoint Portal Server 2003 and Windows SharePoint Services. This process involves installing and configuring the appropriate version of Windows Server 2003, installing Windows SharePoint Services or SharePoint Portal Server 2003 and installing the database component (MSDE, WMSDE or SQL Server 2000).

Part II, "Planning and Implementing a SharePoint 2003 Environment," of this book provides an overview of the business and technology requirements and feature comparison that would lead an organization to choose between Windows SharePoint Services or SharePoint Portal Server 2003 to meet the current and future needs of the organization. These chapters also review the configuration options for Windows SharePoint Services and SharePoint Portal Server 2003 in terms of distributing the SharePoint 2001 capabilities between different servers in a server farm configuration. Chapter 22, "Scaling SharePoint for Enterprise Environments," provides additional information on scaling the SharePoint 2003 environment.

Since there are literally dozens of different ways to configure Windows SharePoint Services and SharePoint Portal Server 2003 when the different databases and server farm configurations, and Account Creation Mode are taken into account, this chapter will focus on the most standard implementations

Another excellent starting point if you are planning on implementing SharePoint in a server farm is to download and read "Microsoft Solution Accelerator for Intranets," which can also be downloaded from http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/, search on "Accelerator for Intranets." Once the OIA_DOCS.exe is downloaded, and expanded, the document titled "Intranets_Build_Test.doc" describes how to build and configure medium and large server farms (as defined in the "Intranets_Overview.doc," one of the other documents that is included in the download).
