Monitor Project Settings

Before you can complete your project, you must keep in mind a few things for the DVD to work properly. One of the main issues to be concerned with is the amount of media you bring into your project and making sure that it does not exceed the physical storage capacity of every medium you plan to master your project on. For instance, if you are burning your project to a DVD-R, your total project (including all your audio, video, and graphic assets) cannot exceed 3.95 GB or 4.7 GB, depending on the size you buy. If you are burning your file to a CD-R, you have a maximum of approximately 700 MB.

DVDit provides a quick and easy way for you to continuously monitor your project's total file size. Select File > Project Settings. The Project Settings window appears, as shown in Figure A.10. Here you can easily see the total file size of your current project. I recommend periodically checking this. If you exceed the total allowable file size, a red bar appears in the Project Settings window, and you cannot master your final project. You need to either increase the delivery platform or begin removing media from your project until you are safely under the total allowable file size.

note

When dealing with any type of storage medium, always remember to leave some available space on the disc. Certain formatting aspects need a small percentage of space for the disc to work properly. Do not attempt to put exactly 3.95 GB of media on a 3.95 GB disc. It will not fit.
