Creating a Web Site

Creating a Web Site

Having gained an understanding of the concepts and terminology used by Content Management Server, and an understanding of the different roles played by the people involved in developing a Web site, let's review the basic development steps with respect to the different roles and tasks, and the order in which those tasks are performed:

  1. The Web site is designed on paper, taking the Content Management Server architecture into account.
  2. The site administrator(s) uses the Site Builder application to create the containers of various types (folders, channels, galleries, and so on), according to the Web site design.
  3. The template designer(s) and resource manager(s) use the Site Builder application to prepare templates for authoring, according to the Web site design (some templates require resources).

In Content Management Server 2002, Microsoft Visual Studio .NET will provide the best environment for template design and creation.

  4. The resource manager(s) creates or otherwise acquires resources required by the Web site design and use the Site Builder application to upload the resources. The authors will use these resources in their content.
  5. Authors log into the Web site, find the appropriate place in the site to add a new page, then switch to editing mode. They choose to create a new page, pick a template, then drag content into place and insert resources. Then they save and submit the page for approval.
  6. Editors log into the Web site and check for pages awaiting their approval. They review and edit the pages, and approve or decline them as required.
  7. Moderators log into the Web site and check for pages awaiting their approval. They review the page location, lifetime, and so on, and approve or decline them as required.
  8. Subscribers visit the Web site, log into it if required, and see the new page.
