This chapter discussed the many factors involved in preparing for a learning event and establishing the learning environment. Now, in exercise 4–1, you have an opportunity to check yourself using a checklist and to make plans to accomplish the items that you haven’t yet completed.
Exercise 4.1: Are you ready to facilitate a learning event?
For the planning list below, check yes or no to indicate whether you have performed the task. If yes, summarize the results or findings; if no, list the actions you will take to complete the task.
| Facilitation Planning Task | Completed? | Results/Actions to Take |
|---|---|---|
| I have studied and assessed learner characteristics. | | |
| I have built strategies into the facilitation to learn more about the learners. | | |
| I have planned facilitation tactics to accommodate learner characteristics. | | |
| I have identified the optimal room setup and the potential need for breakout rooms. | | |
| I have identified and planned for physical environment factors (locations of audiovisual equipment charts, screen, lighting, wall space, room security, and room temperature). | | |
| I have planned appropriate peripheral materials and supporting components (posters, writing utensils, toys/puzzles, refreshments). | | |
| I am prepared physically and mentally (rested, ready to model appropriate energy level, and know what I will do to calm my nerves). | | |
| I am prepared professionally (know what I will say in the beginning; have examined my stance, posture, voice, and physical presence; have chosen appropriate and comfortable clothing). | | |
| I have planned opening components (ready to greet the learners and create their comfort zone; opening activity is planned to set the tone for participative involvement). | | |
| I have identified and planned ways to personalize facilitation and materials to reflect me and my uniqueness. | |
In the next chapter, you will get into the learning event itself, and you’ll learn tips, techniques, and strategies for facilitating various types of learning activities.
