The following is a short list of books and articles that I have found personally valuable. It is not intended to be exhaustive. Instead, it guides you to specific resources and highlights why I've found these resources to be useful. All references are to currently available editions.
Rogers, Carl. The Carl Rogers Reader (Mariner, 1989) and A Way of Being (Mariner, 1995). These books include discussions of reflective listening techniques. Reflective listening was one of the core skills taught in my class on negotiation and intervention at Stanford Business School more than twenty years ago. It remains one of the most powerful tools for discerning real issues and guiding others to find solutions.
Wheatley, Margaret J. Turning to One Another: Simple Conversations to Restore Hope to the Future (Berrett-Koehler, 2002). This thoughtful book invites us to start listening to one another again as an important step toward resolving issues. It offers a series of conversation starters to help readers explore their deepest aspirations and to reclaim conversation as our route back to one another.
