Protection against Viruses

Similar mechanisms allow you to detect some types of viruses and Trojans that have recently captivated the entire Internet. Worm epidemics such as Red Code, Blue Code, Nimda, and so on have once again demonstrated the danger of underestimating the importance of antiviral software. The I Love You virus alone, which appeared in 2000, has inflicted a total of $15 billion dollars worth of damage all over the world. Besides viruses and Internet worms, other dangerous or malicious content can also penetrate a corporate network. Some examples of such content are Java applets and ActiveX controls.

Intrusion detection systems can also be helpful in this case. Although intrusion detection systems can not completely replace classic antiviral software, they can create an additional barrier for viruses and Trojan horses, thus preventing them from infiltrating your corporate network.

Security Service Provider Hacked

On December 3, 2000, Kaspersky Lab reported that hackers had managed to penetrate the Web sites of the Brazilian branch of the Network Associates and McAfee companies. The intruders, who identified themselves as Insanity Zine Corp., defaced the sites by replacing the home pages by the logo of their hack group and texts insulting the Brazilian government and its political leaders. The protests of these Brazilian hackers on the home pages of http://www.nai.com.br and http://www.mcafee.com.br remained there for approximately 1.5 hours, after which the home pages were restored.
