RIPv2 Authentication

RIPv2 authentication is used to authenticate routing messages that are propagated throughout the network. Authentication of these routing response messages prevents the routing tables from being corrupted by routes from fraudulent sources.

Authentication is achieved with a 16-octet maximum password with no encryption. Consequently, RIPv2 authentication messages are susceptible to attack by anyone with direct access to the network.
