Chapter One. What's in a Name ?
Microsoft has not forgotten the needs of desktop application developers. The .NET Framework includes a set of classes in the System.Windows.Forms namespace that allows you to create rich, full-featured desktop GUI applications. These classes include support for Multiple Document Interface (MDI); menus ; ActiveX control hosting; a new type of .NET control called a user control, which is the replacement for ActiveX controls; and Graphical Device Interface (GDI)+, which is the new graphics API in .NET (and the replacement for GDI in Windows). GDI+ includes support for fonts, brushes, two dimensional (2D), and three-dimensional (3D) line drawing, bitmaps, images, and pens. I do not cover Windows Forms extensively in this book, but I will build many of the examples that I use in this book using Windows Forms so that you will get the flavor of how they work.
