The most commonly used programming languages on Linux systems are C and C++. This isn't surprising, since Linux is written predominately in C and includes a C compiler. Most GNU utilities and many commercial products are written in C or C++. It's therefore likely that you will find knowledge about writing, compiling, and running C programs very useful. Of course, Linux supports many other popular programming languages, but this chapter applies primarily to the C language and its supporting tools, since these are so fundamental to Linux environments. |
