Chapter 12. Provisioning and Operating an ONS 15454 SONETSDH Network

Chapter 12. Provisioning and Operating an ONS 15454 SONET/SDH Network

This chapter covers the following topics:

  • Turning Up the ONS 15454

  • Operating and Supporting an ONS 15454 MSPP Network Element

The Cisco ONS 15454 is described as a Multiservice Provisioning Platform (MSPP). The Cisco ONS 15454 is designed to offer many different types of services for the telecommunications industry. Today's market requires service providers and enterprise customers to have communication networks designed to support voice, data, video, and storage services. The ONS 15454 can meet the needs of today's requirements and also operate with legacy telecom equipment for those older provider services, such as DS-1s and DS-3s. The ONS 15454 supports services from DS-1 to OC-192, as well as 10-/100-Mbps and Gigabit Ethernet (GigE), Fibre Channel (FC), and Enterprise System Connection (ESCON) for storage applications.

This chapter was written at a high level; it is not intended to be a step-by-step manual to turn up and operate a Cisco ONS 15454 MSPP. It provides enough information to give anyone interested in this MSPP product working knowledge of the installation and operation of the Cisco ONS 15454 MSPP.

The ONS 15454 provides a graphical user interface (GUI), called Cisco Transport Controller (CTC), that makes it easy to provision, maintain, and operate the system. CTC is an element-management system designed to control a single network element, but it also has the capability to "see" and control multiple network elements on a Synchronous Optical Network (SONET) network.

Note

The Cisco Transport Manager (CTM) is designed to control, manage, and monitor thousands of network elements in a very large network.

CTC also enables the user to provision a circuit automatically from one node to another on a network. This is an important feature because the autoprovisioning functionality automatically creates the circuits that pass through the intermediate nodes on a network without manual intervention. This is a desirable feature for many organizations; however, some organizations might not own all the nodes on a network, so this could prohibit an end-to-end circuit assignment. The ONS 15454 can just as easily provision a circuit within a single node for those applications.

TL1 (Transaction Language 1) is also an option for provisioning of the ONS 15454.

TL1 is the most common man-machine language used in the telecommunications industry. It is common among all major manufacturers of telecommunications equipment, including digital cross-connects, SONET transport, digital loop carrier (DLC), and legacy preSONET optical transport equipment. TL1 can be used via a terminal session through a serial connection on the TCC2 interface module on the 15454 or through a TL1 window in the CTC GUI.

The ONS 15454 also provides the capability to automatically recognize and provision the various common modules and the various interface modules as they are installed in the slots of the shelf.
