Summary

Using adb , there is a lot of initial information that we can collect in a dump. This includes:

  • System hostname

  • System hardware configuration

  • Operating system revision

  • System boot time

  • System crash time

  • The panic message and whether the system was hung or crashed on its own

  • The message buffer

  • The stack traceback

Now that we have some initial information about our crash, we probably will want to go a bit deeper with our analysis work. Before we can do so, we need to explore some other topics.

However, having said that, if you have access to a bug database or, as in the case of SunService customers, the SunSolve CD, you are now armed with enough information to browse through the various databases provided on the CD to see if your system crashed due to a known problem for which a fix may already exist. If you have a SunSolve CD, use some of the information from your panic message and your stack traceback to search through the bugs and patches databases.

At this point, now that you have initial analysis data from adb , the odds are already more in your favor!
