Marquee
Q1:

Why does my Rectangular Marquee tool selection have rounded corners? Every time I make a rectangular selection it has rounded corners. How come?

A1:

This is caused by feathering. When a Feather amount is entered in the Options Bar for the Rectangular Marquee tool (M), that amount will become the default setting, so all subsequent Marquee selections will have feathering. To avoid this, change the Feather to 0 pixels, then make a new selection. Note: This goes for all other selection tools, not just the Rectangular Marquee.

Q2:

Why can't I click-and-drag the Rectangular Marquee tool? It just creates a box as soon as I click.

A2:

Look in the Options Bar and you'll see that the Style for the Rectangular Marquee tool (M) is set to Fixed Size . Change that pop-up menu to Normal and you'll be able to click-and-drag to select again.

Q3:

How do I enter a fixed size in inches? I'm trying to make a Marquee selection of a fixed size, but it only lets me enter the size in pixels and I want to work in inches. Can I change that?

A3:

You could change your Preferences to another unit of measurement, but that's really not necessary. In the Options Bar, change the Style pop-up menu to Fixed Size, then you can type any unit of measurement, such as "px" for pixels, "pt" for points, "in" for inches, "cm" for centimeters, etc. To get a fixed size of 3 inches, you would enter "3 in" in the Width and Height fields.

Q4:

How do I paste (or drag-and-drop) selected pixels to a specific location in a different document?

A4:

Make a small selection in the destination document where you would like the center of the image to be pasted. Now when you paste (Edit>Paste), the selected pixels will be pasted to that specific location. If you're using drag-and-drop, after making the small selection, hold down the Shift key when you drag-and-drop.
