Chapter Thirteen. Step 10: Use Common Sense When Gaming with Others

Kaylyn logged in to the gaming site her big brother had shown her the night before. The site was aimed at younger kids, and 10-year-old Kaylyn had enjoyed creating her player identity last night with her brother watching. The pictures of the characters were cute, and she got to pick her own player name. She chose CuteKitten because she loves cats.

After logging in, she clicked on a game to join. There was another person already playing, and she quickly got caught up with the game's action. At one point the other player said over the headset, "Hey, CuteKitten, how old are you?"

"I'm 10," she replied, her attention still on the game.

Then he said that he wanted to send her an instant message. She rattled off her IM name, still trying to keep up with the game. Her young female voice came over loud and clear through the in-game voice system.

A moment later her IM window popped open with the message, "Where do you live?"

"Outside Detroit," Kaylyn replied. "It's a town called Somerset. You probably never heard of it."

Back in the game, Kaylyn was hit, but not fatally, so she quickly got moving again.

"What school do you go to? Maybe you should just give me your phone number and we can talk for real after the game. It's hard talking and playing at the same time, don't you think?"

Just then Kaylyn's mother came in to tell her that her friend Cindy was on the phone. With a sigh, Kaylyn typed, "Gotta go. 'Bye." and logged out of the game site. Her mother wondered what she had been doing. She would remember to ask her when Kaylyn got off the phone.
