Acknowledgments

The inspiration for this book came from you. Your requests for more information in a format you could take away and share with others led me to Bill Shaughnessy's office with the suggestion of writing a book. Bill, and my manager Jeff Dossett, wholeheartedly encouraged me, and I've yet to decide whether to thank or curse them for that backing, as I truly did not know how much work this would be.

I'm privileged to have been under the tutelage of so many veterans in the book industry. I owe a profound debt to Nancy Muir whose coauthoring and (firm) guidance have been invaluable. She's become a wonderful mentor and friend. Deep gratitude also goes to the Microsoft Press team: to Juliana Aldous and Lucinda Rowley who read the proposal and believed this book would be important; to Melissa von Tschudi-Sutton whose unflagging labor kept all the parts moving forward in the kindest way; to Sandra Haynes for her lost weekends; to Chris Nelson who gracefully assuaged issues that arose; and to Jessie Good, Curtis Philips, Andrea Fox, and Jan Wright, who all contributed to this final product. I am grateful for the care each of you invested in the development of this book.

I also want to thank those who read chapters, provided feedback, and improved this book with your insights, including my parents Richard and JoAn Criddle, David Milstein, Alan Packer, Michael Aldridge, Brian Holdsworth, Amie Servais, Chris Martenson, and Jerry Johnson.

I'm extremely beholden to Ernie Allen, President and CEO, National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC); John Carr, Chair of the UK's Children's Charities' Coalition on Internet Safety; Annie Mullins, Vodafone Global Content Standards Manager; Parry Aftab, Internet Privacy and Security Lawyer and Executive Director of wiredsafety.org; Lucy Berliner, Director, Harborview Center for Sexual Assault and Traumatic Stress, and Clinical Associate Professor, University of Washington School of Social Work and Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences; Kenneth V. Lanning, former Supervisory Special Agent and profiler with the FBI; and Neil J. Salkind, PhD in Psychology and Education Research; all have reviewed portions of the book and/or generously provided quotes.

Special acknowledgment goes to those who graciously let me tell their stories or use their photos, and who will remain nameless for safety reasons, but far from forgotten.

I'd like to express particular appreciation for those closest to me: my youngest son who unselfishly tolerated my long hours at the computer; my older children and parents for their encouragement and belief in me; the loony ladies' club who've been my safety net; my wonderful friends who have always helped me along the way.

And to David, whose support never fails me.

Finally, I'm grateful to everyone who has supported and encouraged this book, because Internet safety is everyone's responsibility.
