Chapter 13. Looking Ahead: JAXB and Beyond

IN THIS CHAPTER

  • Java Architecture for XML Binding

  • JAXB Components

  • JDOM 1.0

  • XML Trust Service APIs

  • XML Digital Signature APIs

  • XML Digital Encryption APIs

  • XML Transactioning API for Java (JAXTX)

  • ebXML CPP/A APIs for Java

  • Streaming API for XML (StAX)

  • Java APIs for WSDL

In the previous chapters, you learned how to use the variety of APIs that Sun Microsystems has released for developing XML-based applications. These APIs are primarily geared for developing and deploying Web services. The only possible exceptions are JAXP and JAXB, which can be used to develop non-Web service applications as well.

In addition to the released APIs, there are a number of other APIs that are under development that are specifically meant to enable you to develop XML-based applications. Similar to the APIs that you learned about in the book, the goal of these APIs is to help you create XML-based applications without needing to master the nuances of XML itself (although it will not hurt a bit if you did).

The development of these APIs is done under the aegis of the Java Community Process (JCP) through a mechanism known as Java Specification Requests (JSRs). You can join the Java Community Process by visiting and registering at http://www.jcp.org/.

At the time of this writing, there were 14 JSRs in the XML technology domain. Of these, six are already in the final stage and have been discussed in this book. The other eight are in various stages of development. In this chapter, we will look at some of the specifications being discussed in the JCP that are geared for using XML with Java.
