DCOM System Utility

The Disk Compression (DCOM) utility rearranges the extent locations of disk file extents.

DCOM moves allocated file extents (areas reserved for the growth of designated files) and free-space extents ( unallocated areas) to different locations on a disk volume.

DCOM consolidates the free-space extents, making larger extents available.

After using DCOM to rearraange disk space, new files with larger extent sizes can be allocated.

DCOM is not a destructive utility, but should only be used by persons responsible for the overall performance of the system. Generally DCOM is used by system operators and system managers.

RISK By the nature of the function of DCOM, this utility requires excessive disk cycles and is not for use during peak performance hours, as it will degrade the performance of the disks.
