Starting Your GroupWise Messenger Agents

The command to start your GroupWise Messenger Agents is NMSTART.NCF. This NCF file is located in the NOVELL\NM directory, wherever you installed the GroupWise Messenger software tofor example, SYS:NOVELL\NM. Here's an example of an NMSTART.NCF file:

load sys:\Novell\NM\ma\nmma.nlm @sys:\Novell\NM\ma\strtup.ma load sys:\Novell\NM\aa\nmaa.nlm @sys:\Novell\NM\aa\strtup.aa

When I installed my GroupWise Messenger system just now for this chapter, and then tried to load the GroupWise Messenger Agents using the NMSTART.NCF file, the agents would not load. I got this error:

Agent configuration failure [0xAD2D] Cause: LDAP Server is not available

Here's what I did to successfully resolve this error:

  1. Edit the STRTUP.MA file, which will typically be in the SYS:\NOVELL\NM\MA directory.

  2. Find the following two switches, and place a semicolon before them to disable these switches:

    ;/ldapipaddr-137.65.55.211 ;/ldapport-389

  3. Go into ConsoleOne. Find the MessengerService object and expand it, as shown in Figure 29.3.

  4. Highlight the LDAPContainer object. Right-click and select New, Object, nnmLDAPProfile.

  5. Give a name to the new LDAP Profile. Select the Define Additional Properties check box.

  6. On the General property page of the LDAP profile that you just created, fill in the following fields:

Base DN: This will often be the root organization of your eDirectory tree.

Username: In this scenario, the name of the user is CN=GWIMSUPERUSER,O=AMERICAS.

    Here's another example: CN=GWIMSUPERUSER,OU=NY,OU=WWW,O=AMERICAS.

Notice that there are commas that delimit the portions of the user's fully distinguished eDirectory name. LDAP uses commas, not periods, to delimit a user's full directory name.

Click the Set Password button and fill in the password for the user you just configured in the Username field.

Figure 29.4 shows the configuration of the sample scenario.

  7. Now go to the Connections property page under the LDAP Profile tab.

  8. Click the Add button. Fill in the address to your LDAP server; specify the LDAP port number of 389 instead of 636, which is the SSL port; and set the preference for the LDAP server at 0. (Enabling SSL is covered in Chapter 27.) Figure 29.5 shows a configured LDAP server connection.

  9. Click OK to save your settings. Now, when you run the NMSTART.NCF file, the GroupWise Messaging Agents should start. Figure 29.6 shows the GroupWise Messaging Agent console screen on a NetWare server.

You have now defined an LDAP server for the GroupWise Messenger system to use. The LDAP services are necessary for users to authenticate, as well as add other users to their buddy lists.
