Today's ISSO is faced with many threats. Where once the threats were primarily internal, because of interfaces to the Internet and other businesses' networks, the number of threats, and thus of threat agents, has grown exponentially. It appears that the internal threats are equally matched by the external threats—or exceed them.
Today's ISSO must understand these internal and external (e.g., global) threats to the company's information and systems. These threats can be categorized as natural and manmade. As a separate category or included in one or both of these categories, one must consider the threat of accidents and their adverse impact on information and systems protection. The new, emerging threat may be the threat of cyber-terrorism.
