Discovery Data Manager

[Previous] [Next]

The most prominent and common SMS site server component in the discovery process is Discovery Data Manager. Its role is to process DDRs written to its inbox on the site server (SMS\Inboxes\Ddm.box) and to create site assignment rules based on the site boundaries as specified in the site control file. It also forwards the site assignment rules to secondary sites and creates Client Configuration Request (CCR) files for discovered Windows NT 4 and Windows 2000 clients if Windows Remote Client Installation has been enabled. (Site assignment rules are the list of subnets and IPX network numbers that define the site boundaries to determine whether discovered computers are assigned to SMS sites. See Chapter 8 for details.) Discovery Data Manager will also forward discovery information via Replication Manager to the parent site, if one exists.

Since it is a site server component, Discovery Data Manager generates status messages and writes more detailed information to its log file (SMS\Logs\Ddm.log) if logging has been enabled for this component. Look for status messages in the 26xx range for specific information related to the processing of DDRs.
