Microsoft Office Word 2003

Microsoft Office Word 2003 is the word processing program that makes documents easier to create, share, and read. The review and markup features have been enhanced to address the many ways that you can track changes and manage comments. Word 2003 also supports Extensible Markup Language (XML) as a file format and serves as a fully functional XML editor.

  • Improved readability Word makes it easier than ever to read documents on your computer with Reading Layout view. Reading Layout view allows you to hide unnecessary toolbars , display the Document Map or the Thumbnail pane, so you can quickly jump to sections of the document, automatically scale the contents of a document to pages that fit comfortably on your screen and that are easy to browse, and highlight portions of the document and add comments or make changes.

  • Compare documents side by side Comparing documents side by side using the Compare Side by Side With command on the Window menu allows you to determine the differences between two documents without having to merge multiple users' changes into one document. You can scroll through both documents at the same time to identify differences between the two documents.

  • Person Names Smart Tag menu Quickly locate contact information, such as a person's phone number, and complete tasks , such as scheduling a meeting, using the Person Names Smart Tag menu. The menu is available using the Smart Tag Options button in Word wherever a person's name appears.

  • Research task pane The Research task pane offers a wide variety of reference information and expanded resources if you have an Internet connection. You can conduct research on topics using an encyclopedia, Web search, or by accessing third-party content.

  • Enhanced international features Word provides enhanced features for creating foreign-language documents and for using documents in a multiple language setting. Mail Merge chooses the correct greeting format based on the gender of the recipient if the language requires it. Mail Merge can also format addresses based on the geographical region of the recipient. Enhancements to typography result in better display of text in more languages than ever before.

  • Enhanced document protection Fine-tune document protection to control document formatting, content, or both. For example, you can specify that only certain styles are available to use, and those styles cannot be modified. When protecting a document for changes to content, you no longer have to apply the same restriction to everyone and to the entire document. You can selectively allow certain people to edit specified parts of the document.

  • Information Rights Management Create or view content with restricted permission using Information Rights Management (IRM). IRM allows individual authors to specify permission for who can access and use documents or e-mail messages, and helps prevent sensitive information from being printed, forwarded, or copied by unauthorized people.

  • Document Workspaces Create a Document Workspace to simplify the process of co-writing, editing, and reviewing documents with others in real time. A Document Workspace site is a Microsoft SharePoint Services site that is centered around one or more documents and is typically created when you use e-mail to send a document as a shared attachment.

  • Support for XML documents Save documents in XML format to make the content of your documents available for automated data-mining and repurposing processes. You can now identify and extract specific pieces of business data from ordinary business documents. For example, an invoice that contains the name and address of a customer or a report that contains last quarter's financial results are no longer static documents. The information they contain can be passed to a database or reused elsewhere, outside of the documents.

  • Support for ink devices If you are using a device that supports ink input, such as a Tablet PC, you can use the tablet pen to take advantage of handwriting in Word 2003. You can mark up a document with handwritten comments and annotations, incorporate handwritten content into a Word document, and send handwritten e-mail messages by using WordMail in Outlook.
