Final Thoughts

In this chapter you created a two-sided marketing piece that can be used to promote either a product or a service. You created a two-color product sheet using not only basic page layout skills, but also advanced text formatting and creative object formatting.

Here are some important concepts to keep in mind:

  • How will this piece be used, and will the product information change or be updated frequently? Answers to these questions will likely dictate whether you will choose longer run lengths and therefore offset printing or whether you will need smaller batches printed with frequent updates, which lends itself to digital printing. If these product/service sheets will be organized along with others, consider a three-hole punch.

  • Alternative distribution methods, such as creating a printable PDF, will save you the cost of printing altogether. This file format and size can be flexible enough to allow you to email this marketing piece, assuming you have such data, or post it on a website or FTP site so that anyone with access can download it.

  • Flowing text throughout a document is a useful skill, and you will use it for many marketing pieces. In this project you created the forward flow of text by threading, utilizing in ports, outports, and multiple column text boxes.

  • In this chapter, you learned some advanced text formatting skills, including creating paragraph styles, creating a drop cap, and using the Glyphs palette for accessing any character you have available on your system.

  • Finally, learning to manage your resource files with the Links palette is very important. In most cases, InDesign creates a link to the placed image file and displays a preview when you place your image. Unless you embed your placed file (which copies the entire file into the InDesign layout), the Links palette keeps track of all placed files and where they are stored. Learning how to interpret the Links palette and its symbols enables you to manage your workflow more efficiently. It also helps you make a smooth transition when you use the Package command to gather your layout, fonts, and resource files for your print service provider.
