One of the most important administration tasks that you need to learn is effective user management. Whether you are creating separate user accounts for yourself or providing accounts for a family of five or even administering a large corporate network, the fundamentals are the same.

Effective user management includes allocating and working with home directories, implementing and enforcing good password policies, and applying security policies (mainly file and directory permissions, but can also involve working with disk space quotas for users). In this chapter, we take a look at how you can work with user accounts. We also cover super user access, more commonly known as root access, and look at it in the context of Ubuntu, which is a fairly unusual distribution in this respect.
