Changing the Order and Timing of Captions

Each slide of a movie can contain numerous captions. Not only can you change the order in which these captions appear, but you can also change how long they remain on the screen.

Changing the display order is important because there will be occasions where you will need to have a caption appear earlier than originally set. For example, you decide the caption that appears fourth in the slide is more important than the one that appears before it. You can easily switch this order.

Display time is also important. Though Captivate calculates the amount of time a caption is visible based on the amount of text in the caption, you may decide to have the caption (or all captions, for that matter) remain on screen for a shorter or longer duration. This calculation is a default setting for the application. To turn it off, select Options > Calculate Caption Timing and deselect the option.

To change the caption order

1.

Open the slide containing the captions in the Edit View panel.

2.

Open the timeline and single-click the caption to be moved.

When you select the caption, the layer turns gray and the selected caption, called an object when it is on the timeline, turns blue (Figure 5.18).

3.

Drag the caption to its new location and release the mouse.

Tip

  • Changing the order of captions is no different from changing the order of objects in a slide (which was explained in Chapter 4). Just keep in mind that the order of appearance is determined by the caption's location on the timeline. If it is at the left, it will display first on playback. If it is at the right, it will display last.

To change the timing of an individual caption

1.

Open the slide containing the caption to be changed in the Edit View panel.

2.

Double-click the caption to open the Caption Properties dialog box.

3.

Click the arrows in the Display Time area to increment or decrement the display time. You can also enter a new time into this input box.

4.

Click OK.

Alternatively, use this method:

1.

Open the slide in the Edit View panel and open the timeline.

2.

Roll the right edge of the Caption object and, when the cursor changes to the split cursor (Figure 5.19), drag the edge to left to shorten the time or to the right to increase the time.

Figure 5.19. You can change caption duration by dragging the right edge of the caption object to the right or left on the timeline.

3.

Release the mouse.
