Chapter 23. Using the Network at the Command LineWhat You'll Learn in This Chapter:
So far, you've learned how to do many things at the command line, including basic file management and housekeeping, high-quality document creation, mathematics, and simple database management. But, of course, the real order of the day in computing is networking, especially email and web browsing. In this chapter, you learn how to use Linux and the command line to accomplish the web browsing and email tasks that are necessary to function in any office or productivity environment. As has been the case with the other chapters in Part IV, you can follow along either in a virtual console or in a Terminal application on the desktop. Note that to make any use of this chapter, you must have your Linux system connected to a network or have dial-up access activated and ready for use (refer to Chapter 3, "Booting, Logging In, and Configuring," if you need help activating dial-up).
