Chapter 20. Creating, Editing, and Saving Text Files

What You'll Learn in This Chapter:

  • How to use the vi text editor

  • How to use the emacs text editor

  • How to suspend a running application at the command line

  • How to resume a suspended application at the command line

  • How to use tools for managing running and suspended applications at the command line

In this chapter, you gain experience with two editors that will be useful to you as you read through the rest of the chapters in Part IV; you use them to create text documents and scripts as you work at the command line. Toward the end of the chapter, you also learn about tools that help you to manage multiple running shell applications.

To begin this chapter, you should already be logged in to your account at a virtual console or have a Terminal window started on your desktop so that you are ready to give commands at the shell prompt.
