Data Design Checklist

  • Develop an understanding of what applications will use your directory initially and in the future.

  • Create a data policy statement.

  • Create a list of the data elements needed by each directory-enabled application.

  • Examine the application-specific lists to locate overlap among data elements.

  • Characterize each data element by:

    • Format

    • Size of values

    • Number of occurrences

    • Data ownership

    • Consumers

    • Dynamic or static?

    • Shared or application-specific?

    • Relationship with other data elements

  • Create a data source inventory for your entire organization.

  • Create a plan for managing the relationship between data sources.
