Introduction

 < Day Day Up >

The Web site has become an integral and critical part of today's enterprise. Enterprises rely increasingly on their Web site for competitive advantage. To attract and retain their customers, an enterprise's Web pages are more complex, sophisticated, and rich in content. On top of that, Web content must change constantly to include the very latest information. The massive amount of Web content and its dynamic nature have led to tremendous demands for cost effective and scalable solutions for managing Web content.

There are many content management products available. However, many enterprises have yet to find an off-the-shelf product that can meet their specific requirements, for example in the areas of site management and access control, and be easily implemented and integrated into their existing infrastructure. They often face the dilemma of the sky rocketing costs of integration, customization, and service required to make the packaged products work in their environment. In some circumstances, it can be more cost effective for enterprises to build a proprietary solution to manage Web content.

IBM Content Manager for Multiplatforms, Version 8 provides another approach to the challenges of managing Web content. Instead of providing a solution, it provides a framework for building sophisticated solutions based on the specific requirements of the enterprise.

Using IBM Content Management for Multiplatforms, Version 8, the High-Volume Web Site team built a content management solution with one of our major customers. This chapter reviews our experience in tool selection, system design, and implementation techniques that contributed to the success of the project.
