Extra Bits

Link Text Internally p. 76

  • If the file to which you're linking is not already part of your Web site, click the Folder icon next to the Link drop-down menu and navigate to it. When Dream-weaver asks to import the file into the site, click Yes.

Link Text Externally p. 78

  • Selecting _blank from the Target drop-down menu opens a new window in the visitor's browserensuring that your site remains visible as the visitor looks at the external Web page.

Color Site Links p. 79

  • Because we only want to color our four link styles, we skip the CSS Rule Definition dialog box. But feel free to experiment. The Block category, for example, lets you create a navigation bar of colored boxes.

  • You also could create the links as their own separate style sheet. The drawback is you have to attach it to all your pages. By creating the link styles within the main style sheet, that's one less style sheet to attach.

Add Anchor Link p. 83

  • The anchor doesn't need to be tied to a text selection.

  • Dreamweaver inserts an icon next to your anchor-link text just to help you spot it. It will not be visible on your Web site. To turn these icons off or on, choose View > Visual Aids > Invisible Elements.

Create Image Map p. 86

  • Image map names should not include any blank spaces or special characters.

  • The hot spot need not exactly match the underlying shape. Just cover the portion your visitors will most likely click.

  • If you can't arrange your document windows to point directly to an anchor, use Browse to reach the file. At the end of the file name selected in the Link text window, type a # and the exact name of the anchor (without a space).

  • A hot spot can link to an internal or external file.
