Changing the View and Zoom

To see the objects you want to work with, you ll often need to change the screen mode and the view, zoom the view, and display and hide objects and windows on screen. Illustrator offers keyboard shortcuts for the most common of these operations.

Keyboard Shortcuts for Changing the Screen Mode and View

Windows [F], Mac [F]

Toggle the screen mode

Press this shortcut to toggle among Standard mode, Full Screen mode, and Full Screen mode with the menu bar.

Windows [Ctrl]-[Y], Mac [ z ]-[Y]

Toggle between Preview and the Outline

Windows [Ctrl]-[Alt]-[Shift]-[Y], Mac [ z ]-[Option]-[Shift]-[Y]

Toggle Overprint Preview on and off

Zoom the view so that the entire illustration fits in the window

Temporarily switch to the Zoom tool in magnify mode

Hold down this shortcut and click with the mouse to magnify the view.

Windows [Ctrl]-[Alt]-[Spacebar], Mac [ z ]-[Option]-[Spacebar]

Temporarily switch to the Zoom tool in reduce mode

Hold down this shortcut and click with the mouse to reduce the view.

Move the Zoom marquee

Press [Spacebar] to move the Zoom marquee while you re dragging with the zoom tool.

On Mac OS X version 10.3 (Panther), the [F11] keyboard shortcut is assigned to the Expos feature by default. The [Shift]-[F11] shortcut slows down the effect of the Expos animation. So you can t use either of these keyboard shortcuts in Illustrator unless you reassign the Expos keyboard shortcut in System Preferences.
