Summary

This chapter presented the basics of the Adaptive Resonance Theory of Grossberg and Carpenter and a C++ implementation of the neural network modeled for this theory. It is an elegant theory that addresses the stability–plasticity dilemma. The network relies on resonance. It is a self-organizing network and does categorization by associating individual neurons of the F₂ layer with individual patterns. By employing a so-called 2/3 rule, it ensures stability in learning patterns.
