Connecting Using RDO

RDO Summary

There are advantages and disadvantages to implementing solutions using RDO.

Advantages

The advantages of using RDO include:
  • It is optimized for ODBC access

RDO is designed to be used when connecting to ODBC databases. Therefore, RDO is optimized for the features and benefits of remote data sources.

  • It provides compatibility with ISAM

Disadvantages

The disadvantages of using RDO include:
  • It only supports 32-bit platforms

RDO is only supported on 32-bit platforms such as Windows 95 and Windows NT. If your application needs to connect to ODBC databases on a 16-bit platform, consider ODBCDirect with DAO.

  • It requires Enterprise editions of Visual Studio products

To implement and leverage the features of RDO, your application must be built using one of Microsoft's Enterprise development tools, such as Visual C++ or Visual Basic 5.0 Enterprise edition. You cannot build solutions using Microsoft Office 97.
