This is a much better book because of the efforts of many reviewers. I would like to thank William C. Wake, who, as the initial reviewer of the book, wielded both axe and scalpel deftly, correcting everything from improper terminology to spelling errors. Eric Freeman was another early reviewer who offered many insights, foremost of which was the value of adding a chapter on imperative languages. This suggestion led to Sling, the most innovative language in the book.

I would like to thank Guy L. Steele Jr. for helping to align this book with standard terminology, and for his many other catches of problems large and small. I would also like to thank Erik R. Knowles, Howard Lee Harkness, and Tim Lindholm for their insightful, thorough, and helpful reviews.

Joshua Engel helped this book immensely, both in early reviews and later " user " reviews. He prompted dozens of changes of content, caught many errors and rough points in the text, and helped to drive the book to be faster, lighter, and smaller. I could not ask for a better reviewer.

Although I was constantly surprised at the thoroughness of the reviewers, I was also impressed at each reviewer's ability to catch mistakes and find improvements that neither I nor the other reviewers had yet discovered . I would particularly like to thank Mary Dageforde, Carl Burnham, Lantz Moore, Adam Bradley, Thanh Giang, and David Thomas for helping to make this a better book.

I cannot thank John Vlissides enough for his improvements to the text, from grammar corrections to his insights on my commentaries on design patterns. Dr. Vlissides and the other technical reviewers are part of the wonderful culture of computer science wherein those who have already moved the field forward happily encourage and assist humble efforts such as this book.

The many excellent reviews of this book would not have been possible without the orchestration of the editors and other staff at Addison-Wesley. I would especially like to thank Julie DiNicola, who has been cheerful, upbeat, prompt, insightful, and a pleasure to work with for many months.
