Project 6-3: Download and Install MySQL Control Center on Windows

In this project, you will download and install MySQLCC on your Windows machine. Now that you have had hands-on experience using the command line with MySQL, you may opt to use the GUI interface at times, depending on your personal preference. Logging in on the command line to execute a single command will probably still be faster; however, viewing and interpreting data in a multicolumn table will be easier in MySQLCC because of the wrap-around format for long lines of data when using the command line.

Step by Step

Open a web browser and go to the download page of the MySQL AB web site for MySQLCC: http://www.mysql.com/downloads/mysqlcc.html.
Click the Pick a mirror link under the Windows downloads section.
Pick a mirror site close to your location and click the accompanying HTTP or FTP link to download the .zip file and save to your hard disk. Once the file download is complete, you may close your browser if desired.
Go to the directory where you saved the .zip file and open it using your ZIP program. When your ZIP program opens, you can either install the program from inside the ZIP program, using temporary directories, or extract it to a file, and then install from there.
Double-click the Setup.exe file.
The Welcome to the MySQL Control Center Installation Wizard window appears. It has standard reminders about closing other programs before beginning the installation process.
Click Next to proceed. The Licensing Agreement window appears with MySQLs GNU agreement. Click the radio button to accept the license agreement.
Click the Next button. The Readme Information window appears. It has some basic installation information, including where to report bugs in MySQLCC.
Click the Next button to proceed. The Destination Folder window that appears next allows you to change the installation location, if you have compelling need to do so. If you need to change the installation directory, click the Browse button and select a new path .
After you specified either the default location or a new one, click the Next button to proceed. The Select Features window appears. This window allows you to decline to install some of the language features for MySQLCC.
All of the Language features combined do not take up a great deal of space on the disk, so unless disk space is incredibly dear, click the Next button and leave all the features marked for installation. The Ready to Install the Application window appears, giving you a chance to click the Back button and change your earlier selections, if necessary.
When your selections are correct, click the Next button to proceed with the installation. A progress bar will indicate the installation progress, and then youll see a window reporting that MySQLCC has been successfully installed.
Click the Finish button to finalize the installation process.
MySQLCC has installed a shortcut icon on your desktop. Double-click it to open MySQLCC.

Project Summary

In this project, you installed MySQLCC. Now, you can use it to interface with your database in a point-and-click, visually-oriented environment. In some circumstances, this will be preferable to working on the command line.
