Plug-ins are small software programs that extend the capabilities and functionality of an application. Adobe has been a proponent of plug-ins for a long time and sparked the growth of many small software development companies with its plug-in architecture for Photoshop and Illustrator and its strong support of plug-in developers. This tradition is continued with InDesign and Acrobat. Although most people don't think of plug-ins when they think of Acrobat, many of Acrobat's built-in features are actually plug-ins. Commenting on a PDF, using paper capture, making a PDF accessible and creating web links on a PDF are all examples of Adobe's own Acrobat plug-ins.
